Wake Analysis
Wake is a three minute long short film directed by Lin Oeding. It is an action/drama short which follows the aftermath of a brother and sisters past which catches them up when they are at the funeral of their father. Despite this film being a different genre to ours, I still think it is a brilliant short film and has some beautiful examples of cinematography, editing and acting. One of my main reasons for choosing to analyse this film over others is the length of it, as it is only three minutes long it which allows me to perfectly see how you can intrigue and entice an audience in such a small amount of time. Over the span of three minutes the protagonist and her brother are deeply explored through the use of only two short but very effective flashbacks which cut during the action to show the brother and sister's relationship when they are training at some sort of gym. From the very start their is a clear sense that this isn't a typical family due to the brother talking about "the money" and how "they" never found it and also how they are surprised their father lived to 65. It instantaneously intrigues the audience and makes them want to watch on to find out more and uncover their backstory. This is something I would really like to incorporate into our own film by getting the audience excited to watch on from the very beginning of the film.
Possibly my favourite character of the short film is the brother due to the way his character is expanded unlike no other. This is due to at first their are very negative connotations of the character as he is dressed in a prisoner's uniform and being escorted by a police officer and then in the initial flashback he seems to be quite aggressive to his sister telling her she is not quitting. Also it appears that he has very different intentions to his sister who seems just to be mourning for her late father when he actually just wants to discuss the money. However later on in the film after the sister has killed the antagonist and everyone else we see another flashback to her and her brother with him motivating her to carry on and then hugging her in a very loving manner showing his true good intentions. From this I gathered that the brother trained his sister to be able to protect herself and keep her safe as he clearly loves her and wants her to be able to defend herself as he knows the trouble they will both have to face due to the family they are in.
Overall I really enjoyed this short film as it added an amazing layer of depth to it's characters in a unique way and also had a small twist showing how the brother really cares for his sister through the flashback. Despite the genre differences I would still personally like to take inspiration from this film for my own such as the depth to the characters in unexpected ways and a level of intrigue that persists throughout until the very end.
